Kitesurfer riding a shallow turquoise lagoon on the Zanzibar coast

The short answer

Quick answer

Zanzibar's south-east coast is one of the easiest places to learn kitesurfing: a shallow, reef-protected lagoon and steady trade winds roughly from December to March and June to September. Beginners start with kite control on the beach, then practise in waist-deep water. Wind is never guaranteed, so keep the days flexible.

01

When is the kitesurfing season in Zanzibar?

Two trade wind seasons shape the year. The Kaskazi blows roughly from December to March, usually warm and steady. The Kusi, roughly June to September, is often stronger and more consistent. Between these seasons the wind is lighter and less reliable.

Wind is weather. Even in season there are calm days, so build a week around kiting rather than a single afternoon, and keep other excursions ready as alternatives.

  • December to March: warm, moderate trade wind
  • June to September: stronger, often most consistent
  • April, May, October and November: less reliable

02

Which spots suit beginners?

The lagoons around Paje, Jambiani and Bwejuu are protected by a reef roughly a kilometre offshore. At mid tide the water is flat and waist deep over long stretches of sand, which means you can stop, stand and restart instead of drifting.

Tide matters as much as wind. At the lowest tides the lagoon empties and sharp reef is exposed, so lessons are timed to the water rather than the clock.

03

What happens in a first lesson?

You begin on the beach learning the wind window, safety systems and how to steer a trainer or depowered kite. Only once that feels natural do you go into the water for body dragging, and later water starts.

Most people need several sessions across a few days before riding independently. Booking two or three consecutive days gives the wind a chance to cooperate.

04

Can experienced riders just rent equipment?

Yes. Tell us your weight, riding level and preferred kite sizes, and equipment is arranged for the days you want. A short check on the beach confirms the setup before you go out.
