Kendwa, Zanzibar: The Calm Neighbour of Nungwi

Kendwa is a few kilometres south of Nungwi on the northwest coast. It has the same easy swimming and the widest soft-sand beach on the island, but a quieter, more spread-out feel, and the sun sets over the water.

How does Kendwa differ from Nungwi?
Kendwa is less dense. Hotels sit further apart along a long, wide beach, and there is no village core right behind the sand the way there is in Nungwi. Many visitors stay in Kendwa and walk or drive the short distance to Nungwi for boats, shops and evenings out.
Because it faces west, Kendwa is one of the best places on Zanzibar to watch the sun go down directly into the Indian Ocean.

Kendwa is a place to slow down first and take excursions second. Most boat activities are shared with Nungwi, and land excursions to Stone Town, the spice farms and Jozani run from here with a morning pickup.
