What is Nungwi actually like?
Nungwi has two sides. Along the water there are hotels, beach restaurants and boat operators; a short walk inland there is a working village with shops, mosques and one of Zanzibar’s last traditional dhow-building yards, where hulls are shaped by hand on the sand.
It is the liveliest beach area on the island, so it suits visitors who like company, evening music and easy access to food. If you want silence, the southeast coast will suit you better.

The north is a natural base for boat-based days. Snorkelling trips, sunset dhow sails, fishing trips and visits to the nearby sandbanks all leave from here, conditions permitting.
