Why do people choose Paje?
The lagoon is flat, shallow and protected by a reef, which makes it one of the best learning environments for kitesurfing anywhere. Even if you never touch a kite, the colour of that water at mid tide is the reason many visitors choose the southeast.
Paje has more small cafés, juice bars and casual restaurants than most villages, without losing its local character. It is a good compromise between quiet Jambiani and busy Nungwi.

What should you plan around the tide?
Swimming is best around high tide. At low tide the lagoon becomes a walkable flat where villagers farm seaweed and collect shellfish — interesting rather than disappointing, and the setting for the night lagoon walk.
