Zanzibar Towns and Villages: Which Area Should You Stay In?

Zanzibar has one historic town, Stone Town, and a ring of coastal villages that each feel different. Nungwi and Kendwa suit swimming and nightlife, Paje suits kitesurfing, Jambiani and Bwejuu suit quiet village life, Matemwe suits Mnemba snorkelling, and Kizimkazi, Makunduchi, Fumba and Uroa stay very local.

How is Zanzibar’s coast organised?
Stone Town sits on the west coast and is the island’s historic and administrative centre. Everything else is a village or small town strung along the coast, roughly an hour to ninety minutes from the airport depending on the direction you travel.
The east and southeast coasts have strong tides, so the sea pulls far back twice a day and returns. The north has deeper water closer to shore, which is why Nungwi and Kendwa are known for swimming at any hour. The southwest, around Fumba and Menai Bay, is sheltered, mangrove-fringed and much quieter.

Which area matches which kind of trip?
If you want to swim whenever you like and have restaurants and bars within walking distance, look north. If you want a wide lagoon, wind sports and a slower village rhythm, look southeast. If you want reef snorkelling as the centre of the trip, Matemwe is the closest base to Mnemba Atoll. If you want culture, food and short walking distances, stay in Stone Town for the first nights.
Many visitors split their stay — two or three nights in Stone Town, then the rest on one beach. That avoids long daily drives and still covers history and coast.

How far apart are the towns?
Driving times are modest but roads are shared with bicycles, scooters and livestock. Stone Town to Nungwi is usually around an hour and a half; Stone Town to Paje or Jambiani around an hour; Nungwi to the southeast coast can take two hours or more. Transfers and excursion pickups are always confirmed in writing in your quotation.
