Uroa and Pongwe sit on the middle of the east coast between Matemwe and Chwaka Bay. Their small coves hold water better than the open southeast lagoon, and both remain quiet fishing villages with a handful of small hotels.

What sets these coves apart?
Pongwe in particular is known for a curved, sheltered bay where swimming is possible across more of the tidal range than in Paje or Jambiani. Coral rocks break up the shoreline, and the water is exceptionally clear on calm days.
Uroa is a larger fishing village just south, where boats come in through the day and life carries on much as it always has.

This is a reading-and-swimming coast rather than an activity hub, with excursions arranged by road or boat from the village.
